Jazz-Funk Mix #1: Hot Doggin'

Hello and welcome to my blog! It's all about funk, jazz, soul and everything that has a groove.

I just uploaded a brand new mix of funky jazz groovers to mixcloud. This is the first mix in the series of contemporary funk & soul mixes.

Here's the tracklist and some info on artists:

1. The Coolin' System - Who's Gonna Take The Weight (G.E.D. Soul, LP, 2011)

The Coolin' System is a new jazz/funk band from Nashville. They have released 7" and LP on G.E.D. Soul records. These guys have a really nice mellow but tight groove and 60's soul-jazz vibe.

2. The Filthy Six - Mozambique (Acid Jazz, LP, 2010)

The Filthy Six is a tight London based jazz group. Their sound is 60's style hammond driven soul-jazz / boogaloo with nice guitar sax and trumpet. They have released 7" and LP on Acid Jazz label.

3. Nick Rossi Set - Monkeyshines (Blow It Hard, 7", 2000)

Nick Rossi is a hammond organist from San Fransisco and he has been prime mover in West Coast R&B scene since 90's. The band was fromed in 1997 and they have released few 45's on various labels and LP "On The Outset" on Hammondbeat records in 2006.

4. Eddie Roberts & The Fire Eaters - Booga Lou (Legere, LP, 2011)

Eddie Roberts, the guitarst of The New Mastersounds, is definetly one of the best guitarists in todays funk scene. Eddie's fast, smooth and dynamic playing style is unique blend of Grant Green, Wes Montgomery and Boogaloo Joe Jones and it's allways fun to listen. Eddie has been active in UK funk scene from 90's, playing with groups like The New Mastersounds, The Sound Stylistics and The James Taylor Quartet.

Booga Lou is taken from Eddies new solo album "Burn!" which is one of the best albums of 2011. The Fire Eaters contains rhythm section from The Sweet Vandals, Chip Wickhan on saxes & flute and Taz Modi on organ.

5. Soulive - For Granted (Royal Family, LP, 2009)

Soulive is a funk/jazz trio from New York. They have released more than 10 albums since 1999 with styles ranging from jazz to hip-hop. This track is taken from their 2009 album "Up Here".

6. Nick Pride & The Pimptones - Hot Doggin' (Record Kicks, LP, 2011)

Nick Pride & The Pimptones is a new cool group formed in Newcastle in 2007. Their debut album "Midnight Feast Of Jazz" was just released on Record Kicks. It's nice mix of jazz, funk and latin styles with contemporary touch and tight playing.

7. New Jersey Kings - Charlie's Groove (Acid Jazz, LP, 1992)

New Jersy Kings are actually James Taylor Quartet under a different name. Early 90's the band was signed to Polydor and label pushed them to record stuff that they didn't like. So they released two albums on Acid Jazz under a pseydonym to satisfy themselves. Charlie's Groove is taken from the first album "Party To The Bus Stop".

8. The James Taylor Quartet - Ma Che Cosa? (Ubiquity, 2LP, 2001)

The James Taylor Quartet, led by hammond monster James Taylor, has released more than 20 albums since 1985. This track is taken from "Message From The Godfather", which is definetly one of the greatest JTQ records. Unlike some of the JTQ albums, this one has really authentic 60-70's jazz-funk sound, live feel and long tight solos.

9. The City Champs - Poppin' (Electraphonic, LP, 2009)

The City Champs are a soul-jazz trio from Memphis. Poppin' is taken from their debut album "The Safecracker". It's a raw funk-jazz piece with really tight guitar solo by Joe Restivo, some heavy hammond playing by Al Gamble and solid drumming of George Sluppick. They have just released new album "The Set-Up" which is worth of checking out.

10. Fast 3 - Brown Bag (Soul' Grocery, 7", 2008)

Fast 3 is an organ trio based in Barcelona and they really are fast! Check out the guitar and organ solos!

11. Sugarman 3 - Double Back (Desco, LP, 2000)

Sugarman 3 is a funky boogaloo band from New York formed in 1996 by saxophonist Neal Sugarman (The Dap-Kings). Other members include organist Adam Scone, guitarist Al Street and drummer Ruby Albin. They have released three studio albums and bunch of 45's. Double Back is from their second album "Soul Donkey".

12. Evil Eddie & The Super Slinkys - 3 On The B (Blow It Hard, 7", 2000)

It's Eddie Roberts here again, with tight boogaloo piece released back in 2000 on Blow It Hard records. Check out guitar and hammond solos!

Stay tuned, next mix will be 21st century deep funk!
